Project Description
Fleming College is seeking funding for a three-year project (2024-2026) which entails creating Kirtland’s Warbler breeding habitat in Campbellcroft, Ontario. The initiative targets retiring marginal farmland within the Featherstone MapleCross Nature Reserve. The project is part of the Ontario Kirtland’s Warbler Working Group, and the requested funding will aid the creation of nearly 60 hectares of habitat through seed collection, soil preparation, and invasive species treatment. Other funders of this project work include the Government of Ontario’s Species at Risk Stewardship Funding. The Featherstone MapleCross Nature Reserve, acquired in 2022, follows a 3-phase field retirement plan for afforestation, contributing to long-term sustainability and expansion. The project includes several activities such as seed collection, propagating and planting difficult-to-seed shrubs, training and knowledge transfer on seed cleaning and storage methods, site preparation for planting, and treating invasive species threatening habitat creation. These activities aim to enhance the long-term sustainability and expansion of the Kirtland’s Warbler habitat collaboration.
Fleming College was awarded $223,841 over three years ($66,639 in 2024, $76,771 in 2025 and $80,431 in 2026).
