Project Status: Ongoing (2024-2026)
The OTCC seeks continued partnership with Ganawenim Meshkiki’s for a comprehensive project addressing threats and declining populations of at-risk turtle species in the Eastern Georgian Bay Region. Focusing on Blanding’s, Eastern musk, and Spotted turtles, the project aligns with GMI’s funding priorities by contributing to survival and recovery efforts. The initiative includes data generation through admissions statistics to inform road mortality mitigation, ongoing disease surveillance, and the release of recovered adults and hatchlings to increase target species populations. The project also treats and releases non-target species to restore degraded habitats. The OTCC aims to build on past success, expanding capacity through a new turtle conservation facility that will serve as a referral and teaching center, enhance educational programming, and increase hatchling overwintering space. The facility is nearing completion, located on a 100-acre property gifted to OTCC, and is expected to be fully operational in 2024.
Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre was awarded $75,000 over 3 years ($25,000 in 2024, $25,000 in 2025 and $25,000 in 2026).
