The Canadian Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake Recovery Implementation Group (CEMRRIG) is dedicated to collaborative conservation efforts for the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake in Ontario, focusing on five key objectives. With 77 members from various backgrounds, including governments, NGOs, Indigenous Nations, universities, and individuals, CEMRRIG operates through four working groups, each addressing specific aspects of conservation. These groups include Community Science and Outreach, Massasauga Ex Situ, Two Eyed Seeing, and Habitats. The organization aims to foster collaboration, share knowledge, provide expert advice, and encourage ecosystem-based approaches to support the recovery of the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake.
CEMRRIG’s Community Science and Outreach Working Group focuses on outreach and education to address threats facing the rattlesnakes. The Massasauga Ex Situ Working Group concentrates on actions related to the captive population and integrates in situ and ex situ data. The Two Eyed Seeing and Habitats working groups, formed in 2023, are currently developing their purpose statements and objectives.
The 2023 annual CEMRRIG membership meeting, attended by 71 participants, discussed updates from the working groups and strategies to reduce the threat of roads on Eastern Massasaugas. Future plans include hosting annual outreach events, facilitating discussions for a webpage outline, and conducting the next membership meeting in late 2024. Working groups will continue to meet as needed throughout the year. The organization remains committed to its collaborative, science-based approach to ensure the conservation and recovery of the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake.
